Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau (born February 6, 1965), professionally known as Y.C Maikyau, is a Nigerian-born lawyer and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He is the current elected 36th President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Maikyau has been in the legal industry for many years. He owns a law firm, Y. C. Maikyau & Co, with branches across the country. Yakubu took over from Olumide Akpata after an election.
Chonoko defeated other contenders who were notable personalities in the legal system. He defeated Messrs Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN, and former General Secretary Jonathan Taidi, NBA. He conferred with the rank of SAN in 2011.

Early Life
Y.C Maikyau was born Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau in Nigeria on February 6, 1965. He hails from Kebbi State, northwestern Nigeria. He started his studies in Yelwa Yauri, Sokoto State, currently Kebbi State. After primary school, he studied at Government Science Secondary School, Zuru, Sokoto State. He obtained his West African Leaving Certificate from the school.
Education
Y.C Maikyau, SAN, studied LL.B at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos, and was called to the Nigerian Bar on December 12, 1990. He holds a Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London.
Maikyau obtained the Interim Joint Matriculation Board Certificate from the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He holds a diploma from the SANS Institute, ESCAL Institute of Advanced Technology, Bethesda, Maryland, United States.
Yakubu is a graduate of Rhema Bible Training Center, Nigeria. He received a Diploma in Ministerial Training with a Major in Societal Leadership.
Career
Yakubu Maikyau started his law firm Y. C. Maikyau & Co. in 2003. The firm has offices in Kebbi, Sokoto, and Abuja and has over seventy percent are young lawyers and most female colleagues.
In 2002 Y.C Maikyau, SAN became a Notary Public and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria on July 7, 2011. He was sworn in on August 26, 2011.
Chonoko is the 36th President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). He polled 22,342 votes to clinch victory, NAN reports. He defeated Jonathan Taidi and Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN.
Maikyau served as the Chairman of the NBA National Welfare Committee under the leadership of Olumide Akpata Esq.
Yakubu has made enormous contributions to the Bar and the lives of lawyers over the years. He has worked as the Chairman Welfare Committee of the NBA.
Maikyau worked with Bagudu’s overseas counsel to prevent the Nigerian government regains any of Abacha’s stolen assets.
Legal
The lawyer has participated in many high-profile cases and has influenced the Nigerian legal system. He was a counsel in the Human Rights Violation Investigation Commission of Nigeria.
Yakubu has been in the legal system as a litigator, sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator, counsel, and presiding arbitrator. He was the Chairman of the North Disciplinary Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Maikyau was also Chairman of the Law and Individual Rights Committee of the Section on Legal Practice.
National Service
Aside from his legal career, Maikyau has served his fatherland in many capacities. The Federal Government of Nigeria appointed him as a Member of the Panel of Conciliators of the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
Yakubu was also a member of the Governing Council of the Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero. He led the Planning Committee of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators’ 2020 Conference.
Community Service
Yakubu is also committed to social work and development. He has dedicated much time to giving back to society. He has carried out many free medical outreaches touching hundreds of people in Kebbi. He is also in support of the welfare and development of the community.
Maikyau has a project called Purpose Global Academy in D’lanko, Kebbi State.
