Though Peter Obi left his seat as the Governor of Anambra State in 2014, electorates still praise him for his achievements during his tenure.
Although, the State House of Assembly impeached him in November 2006. He claims the house wasn’t happy with him for refusing to inflate the annual budget.
On February 9, 2007, Peter was reinstated as the executive Governor of Anambra State after challenging his impeachment. The ruling by the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu returned power to him.
On May 29, 2007, Peter Obi lost the General Election to Andy Uba after the electoral body declared him the winner. Peter was not happy with the results and took it to court.
The Supreme Court of Nigeria returned Obi to the office on June 14, 2007. He runs for President of Nigeria under the Labor Party platform.
Obi had announced his intentions to run for the position under the People’s Democratic Party. He reportedly expresses dissatisfaction with the gravity of bribery during the primaries.
Peter Obi’s Achievements as a Governor
Peter Obi has received praises for his projects and undertakings during his tenure as Governor. Nigerians air their support for most of his leadership qualities, like transparency.

Improved Standard of Living
The Nigerian Debt Management Office mentioned Anambra State as the least indebted Nigerian State. At that time, Peter Obi did not borrow to fund projects.
Anambra State was the first Nigerian State to establish a Sun-Sovereign Wealth savings. When many Governors were in debt, Peter Obi left investment in Anambra State worth US$500 million.
The Senate of Nigeria named Anambra State the most financially stable in Nigeria.
Foreign Relations and Investments
Anambra State had visits by many Ambassadors of foreign countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, the European Union., South Africa, Canada, Israel, and more, as a Governor.
Anambra gained more development partners like the World Bank, DFID, UNDP, UNICEF, and more. Most of them had not established any form of partnership with Anambra State.
People shower Obi praises for creating a conducive business atmosphere for foreign partnerships.
The Obi administration ensured that schools returned to their original missionary owners. The government handled the salary of academic staff while the missions catered to other administrations. This strategy boosted academic performance. Anambra rose from twenty-fourth to Number One in the national exams like NECO and international exams like WAEC for three years.
Another academic development by his administration was the provision of Microsoft Academies to over five hundred secondary schools.
His government provided over thirty-thousand computers to secondary schools in Anambra state. About twenty-two thousand, five hundred units were from HP.
Peter Obi’s government provided over seven hundred buses to secondary schools in Anambra. He built new modern classrooms in the one hundred and seventy-seven communities. He also provided schools with Boreholes.
During his government, over five hundred secondary schools gained internet access. The Chief-executive-officer of Galaxy Backbone commended the effort describing it as incomparable to any Nigerian State.
Health Quality Improvement
Peter Obi’s administration partnered with religious bodies in the health sector. This strategy had a tremendous positive impact on the health sector. Missionary-owned health institutions continued to administer the general health care service while the government-funded these institutions.
Peter Obi left had established over twelve health institutions before leaving office in 2014. Two hospitals had secured accreditations.
His tenure completed the Joseph Nwilo Heart Centre. The center has performed many heart operations.
Many religious-owned hospitals transformed into health centers, including Iyienu Hospital, Ogidi, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala, St. Joseph Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu, St Charles Borromeo Hospital, Onitsha, and more.
Anambra was recognized as the best-performing in immunization in the South-East and received a one million dollar grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
In Awka stands the first state-owned Teaching Hospital, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, built during his tenure as Governor.
Anambra experienced one of her best economic transformations in history under Obi’s administration. Companies came to establish their facilities in Anambra. The notable brewery SABMiller established her first Green Field facility.
Anambra became an oil-producing State when Peter Obi was the executive Governor.
Obi’s government was favorable for starting local, national, and foreign investments. His administration encouraged the INNOSON Motor Manufacturing Company during his tenure. He bought over a thousand vehicles from the Nigerian automobile manufacturer for government use.
Obi-led administration prioritized the security of lives and properties in Anambra State. All Nigerian government security agencies started close collaboration with the Anambra State. The state-supported them with over five hundred thousand security vehicles. This development in security was remarkable.
Each of the one hundred and seventy-seven communities received at least a security vehicle. Other organizations like markets and churches benefited from this development.
Peter improve the structure and appearance of the local vigilante system. This development made it easy for the Nigerian Police Force to work with and monitor the group.
The Obi-led administration re-energized the Anambra State Youth Re-Orientation and Empowerment Programme. Its primary objectives are to provide grants and training to young and aspiring entrepreneurs.
His Youth Employment Fund initiative created many job opportunities for business-minded people.
Peter Obi-led’s administration was the first to do Poverty Mapping in the country. It was to guide them through implementing poverty alleviation strategies in Anambra State.
Infrastructure and Social Amenities
As the Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi approved the construction of internal roads. His administration also oversaw large-scale electrification projects.
Peter Obi’s government began the development of the Igbariam Campus of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University. It also included the construction of other facilities like the Auditorium, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Agriculture, Administrative Block, etc.
During his tenure as Governor, the World Bank supported an erosion project for Anambra State.
Peter Obi underwent the National Peer Review, which examined and inspected state government for good governance. State Peer Review Mechanism handled the scrutinization.
Sector Development Model
Obi’s government introduced the Anambra Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS), a multi-sector development model. This is the first of its kind, and the result was visible in all sectors.
