Ango Abdullahi Biography: Everything About the Former Vice Chancellor

Ango Abdullahi (born December 13, 1938) is a distinguished Professor, public servant, administrator and notable statesman. He is a former Vice-Chancellor of the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.

Professor Abdullahi also participated in politics and was a member representing Zaria northwest constituency. He is an avid lover of agriculture which influenced his academics.

After retiring, Ango returned to practice agriculture. He voices the need for farmers to return to the farm, especially during his tenure as Special Adviser to the President.

Early Life

Ango Abdullahi was born on December 13, 1938, in Old Giwa village, 30 km from Zaria, Kaduna. He comes from a respected family. His father was the village head of Yakawada.

Abdullahi grew up in a community where children were forced to attend schools, aka Makarantan Boko. When he was six, his father decided to recruit him to an elementary school near their village.

The recruited age bracket was eleven to thirteen, but he still had five more years. His mother was not happy with the recruiting decision. He had to live with his aunt, his mother’s younger sister, and his uncle, a teacher at his school.

His father lived for a century, from 1890 to 1990. He returned to his parents at age seven for circumcision according to their tradition. 


After graduating, he enrolled at the Nigerian College of Art and Technology, Zaria, in 1951. He also studied at the University College, Ibadan, and graduated in 1964.

Ango Abdullahi flew to the United States to study at Kansas State University. He obtained an MSc in Agronomy at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1968. He holds a Ph.D. in Agronomy.


After graduating, he started his profession with the Northern Nigeria Ministry of Agriculture. He has worked for the government. He was a member of the Zaria northwest constituency, Kaduna State. 

Ango served as the commissioner for economic planning, North central, from 1973 to 1975. He was the Director of Agricultural Research at Ahmadu Bello University from 1977 to 1979.

Professor Abdullahi served as the Vice-Chancellor of Zaria from 1979 to 1986. After he retired, he went back to his first love, agriculture. He has farms where he practices farming.

Since his days as the Special Adviser to the President on Food and Security, Prof Ango has stressed the need for northern farmers to return to the farm. 

As a professor, the Federal Government honored him as Commander of the Order of the Niger in 2007. He is also a titled man, and his native Zaria Emirate turbaned him the Magajin Rafin Zazzau.

Personal Life

Prof Ango Abdullahi lost his eldest son Isah Ango Abdullahi to a brief illness in Abuja on Thursday, June 30, 2022.

Funeral prayer sessions will hold at Haruna Danja Juma’at Mosque at about 1.30 pm for the deceased. His son was a staff member of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency in Abuja.

His other son Sadiq Ango Abdullahi is a politician. He dumped APC for PDP earlier in February 2022. Gunmen reportedly kidnapped him in May 2022.

Sadiq was in the business class coach of the train before the attack. He stayed in captivity for a month before his release.
